Young Adults

The Young Adult Group at Portmore United Church was formed in 1980. At that time fellowship consisted of approximately four persons and was headed by the then Minister's wife, Mrs. Pauline (POLLY) Evans. Twenty five years later the group membership stands at thirty nine and the group continues to be a vital force in the ministry of teh church.

The group caters to young adults in the age range of twenty five to forty years. It seeks to nurture and develop the spiritual, socical physical cover bible studies, sports and cultural activities, discussions on current affairs, social outreach activities, inter-fellowship and intra-fellowship activities, planning and conducting of night and morning services.

Meetings are held weekly on Saturday evenings at 5:30pm. Bible study is a critical area on the group and is held on the first or second Saturday of the month. The Bible study is usually based on the theme for the month.

Social Outreach Activities:

The social outreach activitives involve vistations to the shut-ins of the church family and to the Stratsmore Children's Home. Shut-in are visited monthly and are provided food items and other basic necessities. the Children's Home is visited quaterly and is provided cash, toys, food items and other basic necessities. The Children's Home is visited quarterly and is provided cash, toys, food items and other basic necessitiess. A special Christmas treat is provided for Children's Home each year. A book drive is also held at the start of the school year to collect and distribute schoolbooks to those in need.

The inter-fellowship activities involve meeting with other Young Adult group in the denomination and participating in the events planned bu the United Church Young Body. Our participation at the annnual young adult fellowhip day has made us the recipient of many trophies and prizes. The intra-fellowship activities in the planning of services and other functions for the church and community.

Over the years, the group's membership has been seriously affected by migration and the challenges of career and family life that affects this age group. Through GOD's grace and mercy, the group continues to grow and the community.
